CHARACTER NAME: Noctis Lucis Caelum
CHARACTER AGE: 30
SERIES: Final Fantasy XV
CHRONOLOGY: Just before appearing at Angelgard at the end of Chapter 13
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: De Chima 008
BACKGROUND: wiki link
Long ago, the world of Eos was ravaged by a disease of darkness called the Starscourge, robbing its people of light and turning them into daemons. The crystal that held the world's soul appointed a man named Ardyn Lucis Caelum to heal the blight and take his place as King. Doing it as Jesus as he could, Ardyn absorbed the darkness into himself, sparing the people who would be his subjects. But, when he presented himself again to the Crystal, it was as a man who was now full toe to tip of darkness, and the Crystal wasn't wild about that. Rejecting him, the Crystal instead chose his brother Somnus to be the first King of Lucis, and gave him a ring that gives him magic powers, saying that eventually a true Chosen King of Light would appear to destroy the darkness once and for all.
Two thousand years later, Regis, the 113th King of Lucis, and his Queen, Aulea, had a son they named Noctis. Though Aulea died soon after her son's birth, so, that sucks. When Noctis was five, the Crystal gave Regis a vision that Noctis would become the Chosen King, and Regis was pretty sad about that, because he knew it was going to mean a lot of suffering for his tiny son. He decided to raise him with the most normal childhood he could, so that he could enjoy whatever years he might have. It was probably kind of hard, since they'd been in a war with the Empire of Niflheim for a while, which came to a head when they sent a snake lady daemon to kill Noctis when he was eight. She got pretty close, and Noctis was sent to the neighboring kingdom of Tenebrae to recuperate.
There, he became friends with the princess, Lunafreya Nox Fleuret. Luna, herself in training to ascend as the Oracle, a high priestess and liaison to Eos' gods, the Six, knew all about the prophecies of the Chosen King and how Noctis fit into them. The two jammed a lot about their eventual roles in saving the world, though without fully understanding how doomed those roles would make them both.
Hey, speaking of doom! Niflheim decided to invade Tenebrae, partly because Regis and Noctis being there would make it a nice two-for-one. Regis made a run for it with Noctis and Luna, but Luna broke free and stayed behind, partly to give them a chance to escape, and partly because she couldn't leave her older brother alone right after the Nifs super killed their mother, the queen. It was rough all around. Noctis and Luna never saw each other again, but they did secretly send each other messages through Luna's magic dogs for years afterward.
From there, Noctis' life returned to the approximation of normality his father had tried to give it. He attended public school instead of private, and as a teenager moved into his own apartment to be more independent, though that only meant he depended on his butler Ignis to do the cooking and cleaning all the more. He did at least work part time jobs during that time, so he wasn't entirely spoiled, just largely. He tried to avoid any thought to his royal duties, as his ascension to king implied his father's death. Maintaining the shield over the crown city of Insomnia that protected the Crystal drew from Regis' own life energy, and after decades of doing so his health was on the decline. He still had a few years left.
When Noctis was 20, Niflheim sent a messenger to Regis, a chancellor named Ardyn Izunia. You may remember him, he was our bad Jesus from earlier. Turns out that absorbing all the darkness in the world made him not just pretty evil, but also immortal, so he's had two thousand years to grow super bitter at the Crystal for his rejection, and the Lucii for their association with it. He's also learned to play the long game. He brings the message that Niflheim will cease all military actions against Lucis if all lands outside Insomnia are surrendered to them. They also want Noctis and Luna to get married, just as a bonus. Regis knows this is bullshit, but also knows that everything's about to get a whole lot worse, so he accepts. It gives him an excuse to get Noctis out of the city, and if he and Luna do manage to get married, it'll be one (1) nice thing to happen to them among a lot of really bad stuff coming.
So, Noctis is sent off with his butler, Ignis, his bodyguard, Gladiolus, and his best friend, Prompto, on a road trip to the bay town of Galdin Quay, where they'll take a ferry to Altissia, a neutral-ish nation that elected to host the wedding. When they get to Galdin, however, the ferry is out of service due to an Imperial blockade, and news comes in that the treaty signing was just a ruse so that Niflheim could wreck shit out of Insomnia. Regis is dead, the Crystal was taken, and Noctis is pretty upset over the whole thing.
It'll fall to Noctis to get the Crystal back, but he is definitely not ready for that. He never fully recovered from his injuries as a child, and they keep him from fully connecting to his kingly magic. So, he and his entourage go off on a quest to find royal tombs filled with legendary weapons of the kings and queens of Lucis to grant him more power. Along the way, they make friends and enemies, fight back against the occupying imperial forces in Lucis, hunt monsters that are causing trouble for money, discover the power of friendship, and get distracted for weeks doing sidequests, as one does. That jerk Ardyn shows up every now and then trying to make friends with Noctis, but mostly just makes him uncomfortable.
At some point, Noctis gets a dog message that Luna's been on a quest of her own, talking him up to the Six so that they'll lend him a hand, but he'll have to seek a personal audience with them to enter into a covenant. Some of them want a fight first, so he can prove he's worth the help. She also mentions that Regis gave her the Ring of the Lucii to hold until she can pass it over to him, so they should probably meet her in Altissia.
After a while, the party manages to get a boat to Altissia, and Noctis is really excited, since Luna's supposed to be there. Maybe they could even still get married, if they can take a break from how totally and utterly doomed they both are. However, when he arrives, he doesn't actually get to see Luna, as she's under the protective custody of the local government, because Niflheim is just as super pumped to kill her as they are him, after she got away from them in Insomnia. Noctis has to practice his diplomatic skills with the First Secretary to secure Luna's freedom to summon the sea goddess Leviathan so that Noctis can enter a covenant with her, and he does! Then Niflheim attacks when Leviathan is summoned and everything goes bad. On top of this, Leviathan straight up doesn't give a fuck, and will not respect Noctis even a little unless he defeats her.
It's a pretty cool boss fight, but Noctis is wiped by the end, and Luna, who got stabbed by Ardyn somewhere in there, uses the last of her strength to heal him. There's like almost a minute there where they're actually reunited, but he's too passed out and she's too dying to really appreciate it. Though he does have a dream where she says goodbye and hands him the ring, which might have been like a real thing she did with magic or something. Days later, when he wakes up, he does have the ring in his hand, but is definitely too upset to wear it at that point. Nonetheless, he decides it time to head to Gralea, capital of Niflheim, and get the crystal back.
They stop by a royal tomb on the way so everyone can fight and be mad at each other because they're all feeling big ways about how everything's gone down, and they need some opportunity to get it all out or that train ride is going to be way too long. They also stop in Tenebrae so Noctis can be overwhelmed by everyone mourning Luna, but also because it's getting tough to keep the train going because the days are disappearing and daemons are all over the tracks. Turns out the darkness is beginning to spread more rapidly without the power of the Oracle keeping it in check.
They get there eventually. Their car, which has been with them through everything, their most faithful friend, is killed, but they get to Gralea. Unfortunately, it's waaaaay too late for them, as it's been cast in perma-night and everyone is daemons. They have to fight through a long compound full of them, and Ardyn separates them and uses a device that turns off Noctis' magic, so he's unarmed except for the Ring of Lucii, and it leaves a lot to be desired. It's a stealth horror game all of a sudden, unless you want to take the easy alternate path that follows the rest of the party, but there's a lot less story that way. After fighting the daemon that used to be the Emperor, Noctis manages to reunite with his friends and they deactivate the device, finally finding the Crystal. As Noctis approaches it, he ends up being sucked in, and Ardyn continues taunting while finally explaining his history and demonstrating that he too has the magic of Lucian kings. Apparently, he doesn't want just the satisfaction of ending the Lucii. It's only true revenge for his rejection if he kills Noctis after he's properly ascended as the Chosen King of Light.
Within the Crystal, Noctis encounters Bahamut, the sixth god. Bahamut explains what exactly the Chosen King's duties will entail, how he must sacrifice himself to destroy the Starscourge once and for all. But first, the Ring of the Lucii, which has been absorbing the life of each Lucian King as they died, must also absorb all of the magic from the Crystal before it can be used at full power, which will take ten years. Noctis must spend that time in reflection within the Crystal to prepare himself for the fight to come.
That day has finally come. J-Pop King Arthur is ready to make his stand against Bad Jesus. In his kingdom's time of greatest need, he steps out of the Crystal, and…
...ends up in a jamjar instead.
PERSONALITY:
When he was younger, the emotion that Noctis was largely defined by was ennui. His mother died when he was an infant, his father meant well and clearly loved him, but was often very occupied with the business of running a nation. And so, Noctis tended to isolate himself and bottle up his feelings. He came off as standoffish and disinterested, especially when presented with reports on political matters. Sure, he could try to keep up with things and be a dutiful prince, but why do that when it means confronting the immense pressure that comes with the fact that his dad will die one day and he'll have to live up to the big deal he's prophesied to be when he could take a nap instead?
He came out of his shell a little more in high school, when he became friends with Prompto. It was a big lesson for him to learn, that enjoying things and smiling every now and then is pretty healthy and can be fun. Having friends to just hang out with and play video games can even be better than a nap. With enough practice, and Prompto being preternaturally infectious, he even learned to be enthusiastic, to the point that the look on his face when he stumbles across a good fishing spot is guaranteed to inspire embarrassment in anyone who sees it. Dude's a huge fucking nerd when you give him the opportunity to be.
Noctis never wanted to be a prince, and struggles to really see himself as one. He saw himself as no better or different than the people he surrounded himself with. But there was also no small part of royal privilege in that, given that it ignored how many of them had been there specifically because he was the prince, and much as they may like him as a person and would choose to be with him anyway, they were there to begin with because they had their own duties to him. Noctis was just spoiled enough that he tended to take that for granted. This had been especially true of Ignis, who had been assigned as his retainer since they were both very young, and who had seen to Noctis' every need, sometimes to his own detriment.
Now having to come into his own as a king, this is a perspective Noctis has had to work on, and he tries to practice more respect for the people around him and recognize what they are doing for him. He's coming to the end of his journey, and it's one he never would have gotten anywhere on without a lot of help, both from his entourage and others in the royal service. There's a photo they took before sailing to Altissia that has been hanging on his mind about that, and he wonders if Prompto still has it.
But spending ten years in a crystal void with no other company than a giant dragon god who can only be described as "stern" is not an ideal environment for massive social development. Noctis may seem more confident and restrained, even regal at times, but it is really tough, let me tell you. When he acts with any kind of kingly demeanor, he still mostly thinks of what kind of response his father would have given, and does that. Which is a bittersweet feeling, because it means he's thinking about his father a lot.
Noctis is a man whose hourglass has only so many grains left in it, and it can make him more prone to outbursts of very sincere emotion. He missed his opportunity to tell his father and Luna how deeply he felt for them both when he lost them, and he doesn't want to make that mistake again. He knows where Regis stood, but he can only hope that when Luna his messages, she would feel as loved as he did reading hers. Perhaps he'll meet her again after he dies, and right what wrongs were left then. But until then, he's going to be very upfront about how much he loves the people around him, and he's definitely going to cry while he does. It's still a struggle, because keeping things inside is his natural inclination, and he doesn't what to put a greater burden on the people who've already shouldered so much for him, but he's trying his best.
He's committed and resolute in the face of adversity, and won't back down from a fight. But when the threat is ended, he doesn't spare his enemies compassion. His job as the Chosen King is to become the world's hope, and his own hope extends even to them, that they'll find a peace that will end their fight, and bring them into harmony with the rest of the world. He knows it's naive, but he has to hope. It's his job.
POWER:
Power of Kings: The royal magic of the Lucii. It enables Noctis to conjure weapons, Royal Arms, his fishing rod, and other items from thin air, warp by throwing his weapon and appearing where it lands, create grenades of elemental magic, and phase through solid matter for a limited time. In canon he could grant a portion of this power to others, allowing them to conjure weapons the same way, but he won't be able to do that in game.
He can also trigger the Armiger, which is a supercharged mode of his natural magic. It allows him to conjure all of the Royal Arms at once, which can be fired as projectiles or hover around him as a shield. In its ultimate form, he gains the power of flight, and dramatically increases the speed, power, and delivery of his conjurations, but he can only maintain this form for a limited period of time, and it takes a lot out of him.
Zoolingualism: hell yes i want to give him the power to talk to animals, are you kidding
Umbra: One of Lunafreya's magic dogs, Umbra is very probably some kind of angel kind of spirit creature given corporeal form as a Shiba Inu/Alaskan Malamute mix. He's very intelligent for a dog, and good at passing messages along. He wears a cute satchel around his torso to carry them. In game I'd like him to have the power to cross great distances by walking through shadows.

THE ROYAL ARMS
I. Sword of the Wise: Automatically closes any distance between its target when swung, via a preemptive warp-strike.
II. Axe of the Conqueror: It's just a big, heavy halberd.
III. Bow of the Clever: A crossbow that never needs to be reloaded and can pierce through multiple foes.
IV. Swords of the Wanderer: Two daggers that can combine into a single sword that looks kind of like a bat'leth.
V. Blade of the Mystic: Belonged to Somnus, first Lucian king. Increases the strength of its wielder for a short time.
VI. Star of the Rogue: A giant shuriken that will always arc back to its wielder's hand.
VII. Sword of the Tall: A greatsword with teeth on its cutting edge, like a saw.
VIII. Shield of the Just: A tower shield capable of deflecting blows that would crumble most shields.
IX. Mace of the Fierce: Just a big ol' mace, possibly heavier than is reasonable considering Noctis can wield it alright, if slowly.
X. Scepter of the Pious: Takes the form of other weapons to fit its use, mostly other Royal Arms. It's a jack of all trades, master of none sort of thing.
XI. Trident of the Oracle: A symbol of Lunafreya's station, passed to Noctis after her death. It can create holograms that fight alongside the wielder.
XII. Katana of the Warrior: A sword that can deliver devastating slashes, but takes a heavy toll on the wielder.
XIII. Sword of the Father: Regis' sword. Like the Blade of the Mystic, also increases the strength of its wielder, but twice as much for half the time.
